When there is a food shortage, civilised humans can start to act erratically.
After a few short days without any food, humans can behave in ways that are almost animalistic and extremely unpleasant. The US Pentagon actually conducted some studies on how starvation affects the body during the 1950’s. What they found was truly shocking. After 10 days without food, people started to attack others, steal food, and even attempt to kill others. After 15 days, they started to demonstrate cannibalistic tendencies. A week without food does awful things to person’s psyche, making them contemplate doing the unimaginable. They become truly desperate after two weeks, thinking thoughts that are truly depraved, and setting aside their codes of conduct and respect for the law.
We can look back at history to see how many humans have reacted to a lack of food. When Leningrad was sieged over a period of three years, around 630,000 people died. Those who had just a crust for bead to eat were considered privileged. The majority of people tried to survive by consuming wallpaper and rats. There were even some situations where people ate their colleagues and unearthed bodies to eat corpses. You’ll often notice that in emergency situations, supermarket store shelves can become completely empty in a matter of hours. If you do not have some supplies stored up for just such a situation, you could find yourself in a bad place.
Let’s look at the pattern that usually develops: The first day, grocery stores start to empty out and people begin to fight over the food that remains. The second days sees people still having food in their homes, but they cut back on how much they are eating. They are doing what they can to stretch their supplies. People begin to become moody and edgy as they see disaster approaching. On the fifth day, food becomes scarce and people are starting to run out of supplies. Your neighbours may start knocking on your door, trying to see if they can get some food. By the tenth day, you’ll see roving gangs of people with knives, clubs, and other weapons. They take food by force, and you may hear people screaming or letting out gunshots throughout your neighbourhood. People become scared to leave their homes. On the fifteenth day, people begin to die, and there is little hope left among the populace. The people you once trusted will turn on you, and there will be danger around every corner. The government and local authorities become overwhelmed because the entire area is experiencing the same problem, and even the government is running out of supplies. This is not an impossible situation we have come up with here. It is how events are likely to happen based on what research has uncovered.
In a severe food crisis, the situation becomes hopeless very quickly. You’ll find little attention being given on the mainstream news about an impeding food crisis, but it is happening. There are a lot of scientists who are absolutely convinced that a worldwide famine is coming. This is happening because the world population is steadily increasing, and land is being over-farmed and overfished. The statistics regarding world hunger are these: Around a billion people go to bed each night having not gotten enough food. One person starves to death about every four seconds, and most of them are under five years old. Around 30% of all children in the world who are less than five years old are extremely malnourished.
There are natural catastrophes of all kinds that contribute to decreased food production and hurt our food supplies. Things like fires, flood and disease often lead to food shortages and famine. The difference between surviving food shortages and not surviving one comes down to having food stored up. You can prepare for the inevitable food crisis and survive or perish in it.
